Elmar Gilbertsson began his singing studies in 2001 and graduated from the Sigurdur Demetz Music School in Reykjavik in the spring of 2007. In the spring of 2009 he finished his master studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and Conservatory of Amsterdam with tenor Jon Thorsteinsson and coach Peter Nilson.

Elmar was a member of the “Dutch National Opera Academy” where he performed various operatic roles, such as Chevalier de la Force of Poulenc´s Dialogues des Carmelites, Don Ottavio in Mozart´s Don Giovanni, Nerone in Monteverdi´s L´incoronazione di Poppea and Ferrando in Mozart´s Cosí fan tutte.

Elmar has participated in masterclasses with various teachers, for example Ryland Davies, Mark Tucker, Patricia MacMahon, Graciela Araya and Miranda von Kralingen, and received coacings from Marco Canepa, Muriel Coradini and Niels Muus. He has also worked together with conductors Henrik Shcaefer, Richard Egarr, Jaques van Steen, Mark Albrecht, Pablo Heras Casado and Glen Wilson.

Elmar was a member of Operastudio Nederland, where he sang in Purcells Dido & Aeneas, a joined production of Operastudio Nederland, Opera Zuid and Opera Royal De Wallonie, and in the studio´s production of Monteverdis L´Orfeo with director Pierre Audi and young Thai conductor Trisdee Na Patalung.

Elmar has the last years been working mainly in various opera and concert houses in Europe, such as De Natinonale Opera in Amsterdam, Opera Zuid in Maastricht, Ruhrtrienalle in Bocum, Janacek festival in Brno, Festival Aix-en-Provence, Nantes-Angers Opera, Opera de Toulon and Barbican center in London.

Elmar is currently working as a freelance singer and has been engaged by various opera and music organisations for the coming seasons. Upcoming are productions of Eugene Onegin with the Icelandic Opera, Die Entfürung auf dem Serail in Toulon, Das Rheingold in Hamburg and Ariadne auf Naxos in La Monnet, Bruxelles.
